employee spotlight: Brittany
Tell us a little about yourself.
I'm Brittany and I live in my hometown of Lafayette, Indiana. I'm a recovering sinner and Jesus follower. I am a wife to a guy that moved to Indiana for school (from Colorado) and now calls Indiana his home. We adopted a Pug dog named Waylon 5 years ago who hangs out with us at the candle studio most days. I spend most of the week making candles with a fun team of lady friends!
What is your job at Antique Candle Co®?
I do a lot of fun things at work - I am the founder of Antique Candle Co.® (Previously Antique Candle Works) I remember writing the business plan for this business in January 2014 on our dining room table. I make candles, ship orders, interact with our friends (customers) on social media, and hang out with my work buddies all day.
I'm also in charge of our Fun Friday activity every week. This usually includes something like "Wicking Wars" where we compete to pre-wick the mason jar candles. Whoever is fastest gets something amazing—like a new Yeti!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I LOVE to spend time with my church family and worshiping with them every Sunday. I also love to watch my favorite TV shows like The Walking Dead, Law & Order: SVU, Grey's Anatomy, Outlander and The Profit; haha (there's more, but I don't want to look too crazy). I also enjoy vacationing with my husband regularly. My favorite places we've visited are Las Vegas and the Appalachian Mountains.
What is your favorite place to grab some grub?
Sharma's Kitchen in Lafayette, IN. It’s the BEST Indian food, hand down. I've been to a lot of Indian restaurants all over the US and they have the most expansive buffet selection.
What is your favorite Bible verse?
Romans 1:16 - I love this verse because it's a reminder to myself to be bold and unapologetic about the gospel. The fact that Jesus decided to leave the throne of heaven and enter the world and knowing he was going to have to carry the burden of my sin is true love to me.
What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie is Interstellar. This movie is so powerful - I've never ugly cried so hard in a public movie theatre. Haha!
What is something that most people don't know about you?
While I was a student at Purdue, one of my side hustles was radio and TV advertising. I voiced multiple radio commercials for Plato's Closet and did TV commercials for University Bookstore.
You are happiest when...
I am laughing so hard it hurts - usually from watching Impractical Jokers. I love a good prank.
What part of working at Antique Candle Co.® do you enjoy the most?
When I look around and everyone at work is joking and having a good time (and yes - we work while doing this!). We arrive at work to accomplish tasks, but I find a lot of joy knowing that people want to be here and are invested in each other's relationships.
Do you have any life goals?
I want to be in tune with the Spirit and His leading. I want to live a radical life - knowing that I was a good and faithful servant to the Lord. I also want to create fun and excitement in the sometimes mundane parts of life (like work!).
Have you learned anything from building and working at Antique Candle Co.®?
That a small business can be successful and offer a good living for more than one person. I've also learned that we can create a company culture that is honoring to God. I just love that!
What is your favorite fragrance at Antique Candle Co.®?
Cashmere is my old favorite (a discontinued scent).
My new favorite fragrance is Wildflowers. It's super, amazing-ly fresh. Do you know that refreshing smell of a floral shop? That's what this candle reminds me of! It just smells like a fresh bouquet of the most beautiful flowers.
What is your favorite thing about Lafayette/West Lafayette, Indiana?
Purdue University. It was a privilege to be a student for four years and I grew up a lot professionally. I love visiting campus - it reminds me of the days where I met my husband. The Neon Cactus is a fun place too - it doesn't have the best reputation, but it's a one-of-a-kind place to visit in Lafayette!
